i wonder whether spinning Oklahoma's resumption of executions as "US state resumes program of human sacrifice" would make people think twice about casually supporting it?

because let's be clear, when you start scheduling executions at regular intervals, human sacrifice is *exactly* what you're doing. whether to a deity or another abstract concept.

...not that i support capital punishment under *any* circumstances, to be clear - but when it turns from "this crime is so heinous, this person so dangerous, that only their death can neutralise the threat they pose to society at large" to "hey, guys, hurry it up, we have a quota to make" that's... well, like i said

@thamesynne I think the Catholic Church might be consistently "pro-life" as in being against the death penalty, but the U.S.A. political attitudes are set up in a way that it's hard to see coherency...
