@porsupah @Angle Since you mention #LiveJournal: #Dreamwidth still exists—though they are in the US, so they don't meet your venue criteria as such.
They remain quite value-aligned by what I would consider “independent Internet” standards, though they seem to have pretty limited update-all-the-code resources. If you're looking for the Most Consistent and Streamlined UI Ever and Everything Mobile First and so forth, you probably won't get it.
One of my friends who has a visual impairment was struck by how easy the more-Web-1.0 stuff was to make look tolerable in eir preferred environment, compared to sites with All the Scripting and Obtuse Style Hacks, though I don't know if ey's representative.
They do _not_ require invite codes right now and have not for a long time AFAIK, in case you still remember when they did that—though presumably they may enable them again if there are registration spikes.

For being “basically LiveJournal but they still care and didn't sell out”, they're still good. We're chalcedony_jade there. ^..^
