Yeah probably people are shy to ask you questions because it's generally well-known that there are questions that are Offensive, but a lot of cis folks really do not understand what or why. So they're afraid to ask any questions at all.
My one cishet friend from high school was afraid to ask what pronouns his student uses, because he was afraid it was an offensive question.
I think the normal (non-phobic) cishets just peripherally hear that something is an issue people fight over, and rather than reading up enough to see "wow, the transphobes are being really petty," they assume there must be some reason it's actually hard. So they're afraid that "just use common sense here" will lead them into trouble.
