And we’re back. With a new experiment from the department of Likes Are Floops: BOTTOM-UP TIMELINE. Show more
First off: the official soundtrack of this update can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqzA2rrZA08.
We have gotten used to reading Twitter conversations in reverse order.
We all hate doing this. Or at least I do. But it's How Twitter Works. And it's How Mastodon Works right now, too.
Twitter has *kind of* tried to fix it, with that thing where they detect a conversation and glom all the relevant tweets together. But their timeline is still resisting this.
What if we change this? What if we set things up so that the newest things people are saying are at the bottom of the list, so that you see your friends having a conversation in normal order as you scroll down the last little bit of your timeline?
This is NOT a finished feature; it is a quick experiment with the simplest version that will mostly work, so I can decide if it's worth doing right.
I’ll admit, it kind of makes my brain hurt right now. I’m used to the way Twitter works too. But I’m going to stick with it a while, and see how it feels after a few days; if it starts to feel good, then I’ll spend some time actually turning this into a reasonably polished experience, instead of the ugly little CSS kludge it is right now.
🔥 When you load dragon.style, you’ll be at the top of your timeline, with the oldest entries down at the bottom of the scroll. Is this the way it should work? Should we be starting at the very bottom instead? Somewhere in between? I don’t know.
🔥 There’s a LOT of blank space below the newest/bottommost rars in the timelines. Like one and a half the height of your screen’s worth. This is so you have a healthy amount of space between scrolling to the newest rar and triggering the “load older rars, put them at the top of the timeline, and push everything down” behavior.
If none of those problems scare you away, then you can try out this feature by going to https://dragon.style/settings/preferences. Scroll down the page and change the Site Theme to “The Sounds of Waves Reversing”.
Okay that's it, I guess. I'm gonna turn off the Internet and go get some drawing done now.

If you would like to try this on some other Mastodon instance, you can use a plugin like Stylish to apply it from here: https://userstyles.org/styles/151271/new-toots-at-the-bottom
And if you are a fellow Mastodon admin who would like to fool with this, check out the changelog at https://github.com/egypturnash/mastodon/commit/611434bdfd4125d4ab6434d203fc98f84c1e35d7 and tweak the 'import' statement at the top of backwards.scss to refer to whichever style on your site you'd like to make a backwards version of.
(see the earlier rars in this thread if you wanna try the quick proof-of-concept css-only tweak I've been using.)
