I’ve been hearing that the Vlad Taltos books are pretty good for a while. I’m finally reading the first one and it is immensely charming and readable!
Whether I’ll want to come back to this voice and world a dozen times is an open question. But the first one’s fun even to this jaded old lady who’s read every fantasy trope at least three times by now.
@anthracite oh I LOVE the Vlad Taltos books, I'm glad you're enjoying them
@anthracite I need to toss in a second hand recommendation on the Taltos series. I haven't read them yet myself, but the author is/was local to my childhood stomping grounds, and my dad (who got me into genre fiction) has read them all and enjoyed them, so there's probably a lot to be said for them
@anthracite The books go through various different styles, and they're rarely as light-hearted as the first one. I definitely recommend sticking with them, there's a lot of interesting things going on that aren't obvious at first.
@anthracite If you start going Meh at Vlad, try Phoenix Guards; it's a different style, pastiche of Three Musketeers. I like both, but swapping "voices" helps not overdose.
(Can I eat him, Boss? Can I?)
