Imagine the Tories decided to turn their whole thing into getting rid of taxes. Like their entire thing.

People in the UK would say, well, now, wait a moment. My taxes pay for the NHS and I really like them, so I think paying taxes is pretty good.

And the Tories would say, no, it's bad because rich people pay them.

Now in the UK because class, you can get a lot of people to agree, well obviously the ~upper classes~ should be exempt from having to pay taxes because they are better than us in every way. This doesn't work as well in the US.

So how do you get people who like services to hate tax? You make the experience of actually doing it as awful as possible. Everyone in the US has to do enormously complex forms to figure out their own tax burden. Then, if their paycheck withholding has been too low, they have to find a bunch of money in a hurry. If they make a math error, they face enormous fines or jail. It's a nightmare. So one of the parties points at this awful experience and says, "taxes are bad! We should just do a flat tax that massively benefits rich people!" and a lot of people agree! Taxes are awful and simpler formulas would be better. So they vote for the party who wants to simply the taxes.

Then that party gets power and gives away everything to rich people and then passes laws to make taxes *more* painful for everyone else, so they can keep being anti-tax.

Alright, let’s give this another try, as I know there are still people here on mastodon who have wealth to redistribute.

my friend jak has had her living situation very abruptly upheaved, she had to make an 11 hour drive back to her home state last night

while she has someone to stay with for now it's not ideal bc she's worried about bumping into her family while there

she's started a gofundme to help her save up so she can move to tennessee to be closer to me and my brother, so at least if anything happens again she may be able to stay with us where we can make sure she's safe and taken care of
